Property Loss Consulting

Multi-hazard Risk Assessment Click for printer-friendly version

For the new owner of an electrical utility, we assessed the risk of hurricanes, earthquakes, and storm surges on four Caribbean islands containing 11 power plants and 12,000 miles of transmission lines.Risk engineering is the evaluation, quantification, and mitigation of potential damage to a facility resulting from natural or manmade hazards. Using real-world engineering experience and leading edge technology we evaluate the potential for damage, business interruption, and more subtle incremental losses that can occur from hurricanes, tornado, earthquakes, floods, blasts, and other hazards. Customized Probable Maximum Loss (PML) studies can help clients quantify their risk and make informed insurance decisions, while mitigation studies can provide practical solutions to reduce the impact of a hazard to a client’s facility.

Scope of Damage Determination Click for printer-friendly version

Speedy insurance settlements to aid Houston’s recovery from Hurricane Ike require prompt and efficient damage determination, as at this Louisiana Street high rise. We can serve as a comprehensive, single-source information provider investigating, documenting, analyzing, and determining the extent and severity of property damage to a building or other facility type occurring from a covered-loss event. Operating globally, assessing the depth and extent of damage from man-made or natural disasters, our structural engineers, architects, and MEP professionals offer a multidisciplinary approach to provide our insurance clients with a thorough, detailed assessment for the purpose of both quantifying and qualifying property damage.

Cause & Origin Investigation Click for printer-friendly version

From on-site observations, document reviews and independent analyses we identified the cause and origin of this parking garage collapse during construction. Whether it is determining the source of water intrusion passing through a curtainwall, identifying the origin of a structural collapse, or determining the cause of failure at a retractable stadium roof, we offer a team of forensic engineers, architects, and MEP professionals that provides a multidisciplinary approach to determining the cause and origin of property damage. Working with independent adjusters, attorneys or their representatives, we take a lead role in investigating the cause and origin of damage to structures or equipment directly resulting from a man-made or natural event. We then provide definitive answers to complex questions, help define the issues, and offer litigation support and expert witness testimony.

Building Code Consulting Click for printer-friendly version

Struck by a massive fire, we evaluated an unreinforced masonry structure in California that posed numerous code compliance upgrade issues, including seismic design, fire protection and disabled access requirements.Local and regional building codes are continually revised. Some changes must be implemented in existing construction, while other requirements apply only to new or rebuilt projects, as may occur after a catastrophic property loss. Our building code consulting services provide clients with independent evaluations of requisite as well as event-driven code compliance evaluations and accompanying recommendations for achieving compliance. Possible areas of investigation include: structural design, building skin, ADA (accessibility), fire protection, and specialized or historic structures.

Green Claims Consulting Click for printer-friendly version

In an effort to determine the source of water intrusion and resultant damage that was adversely affecting a LEED certified building envelope, we evaluated a “green” roof at the St. Phillips Academy in New Jersey on behalf of a major insurance carrier.A new class of buildings designed to minimize impact on the environment and maximize occupant health and well-being is rapidly emerging. These sustainable design or “green” buildings, which often have LEED-certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), bring a new set of issues to property loss and claims activities, ranging from re-certification, re-commissioning and availability of local or recycled materials to the need for specialized consulting services, that all have the potential to impact a project’s cost and construction schedule. Our knowledge of sustainable design technologies and the LEED rating system enables us to consult on all technical aspects during the claims adjustment process.
